Three Reasons Why You Need Your Own Website

I created a personal website years ago. I remember loving the process. Choosing the colors, the typography, the photos; it was fun. I’m an entrepreneur by trade and a creative at heart. I love my little ‘projects,’ and creating my personal website was the most fun of all.

This process hits a nerve, though. Something innate; the desire to be known and understood by the world. We want to be seen. And that’s what a personal website gives you: an opportunity to tell the truth about who you are. It’s a place for you to organize your thoughts and share them intentionally with others.

My personal website has continued to evolve as I’ve evolved. It’s always changing as I am always changing. I love that I have a place to share my knowledge, connect with my audience, and let others know how they can work with me. A personal website makes it real. Here are three main reasons you should start yours sooner rather than later.

Your personal website is a live portfolio of your work and achievements.

Why wait for someone to ask for your resume or LinkedIn profile when you can direct potential employers, investors, or clients to a live portfolio? We must make it incredibly easy for people to want to hire and work with us. Having a personal website shows that you are serious about your professional life and that you are easy to work with. (People love easy, the easier the better).

People are visual. A resume or proposal can oftentimes look dull and lackluster. A personal website has the freedom to be much more expressive and engaging since it allows for the inclusion of photos, work samples, and testimonials. We always want to “show” vs. “tell”. A website can show how great you are, without you having to tell people.

Control your narrative.

Many of my students in Personal Brand Accelerator find that creating a personal website is an amazing period of self-discovery. The formula I give my students in PBA helps them learn more about themselves and clarifies their message that they want to share with the world. Have you thought about what yours might be?

Your website will help you put your best foot forward and attract like-minded people who share similar values and principles that you do in your brand and business. (By building my personal brand, I have met many amazing entrepreneurs who I’ve had the joy of working with and helped me become a better businesswoman)!

Stand apart from the crowd.

There are thousands of people in the world who do what you do. Everyone is competing for our time and attention. A personal website will help you cut through the noise and help you stand apart from the rest of the crowd. Having a personal website is innovative--it’s going the extra mile--and it lets the world know that you are credible, intentional, and hard-working.

If someone tries to find you on social media, (or find your resume in a clouded inbox) you could get lost among the other professionals who share your name or title. But if you have a personal website aggregating your various networks (and put that URL on your resume), you will likely make a strong impression and achieve the goals you have for your personal brand.
