How to Gain Your First 1,000 Email Subscribers
It's hard to convince people to give you their email address. It's like this golden nugget that everyone wants, but nobody wants to give away. To gain someone's email address, you need to offer them something of real, substantial value.
So, let me ask you this:
Are your freebies worth it?
Would you subscribe for your own freebies?
If not, then how can you anticipate that others will?
So, what’s the best lead magnet?
The hard truth is, freebies and guides are extremely outdated. They are not very useful—unless you are solving a specific problem with a highly targeted template or guide that's clear and straight to the point.
But a quiz? Quizzes are engaging; they’re interactive. Quizzes have the ability to bring people into the process of discovering who they are, while also giving them custom solutions to their unique problems.
I chose to launch a quiz on my website because, at the time, it seemed like an exciting way to build an email list. It also felt like something I would actually do myself. And I figured if it was something I would do myself, then others might do it, too.
As it turns out, I was right.
Over 9,000 people have subscribed to my quiz.
Here are the stats:

Quizzes Have Changed The Game
Honestly, using quizzes has completely transformed my business. It's been amazing. Interact Quiz Maker was one of the first tools I ever used as an entrepreneur, and it helped me gain my first 1,000 email subscribers.
Had I not used Interact, I definitely wouldn't have been able to build my email list as quickly. And if I didn't have an email list, I wouldn't have been able to sell my services as quickly as I did either.
I have been able to reach millions of people through my quiz, content on social media, and my blog. To anyone who's getting started, this is a long and winding road, but it is so worth it in the end to just stick with it and keep going.
Targeting My ICP Online
Typically, my audience finds me through Instagram, Google, TikTok, and my podcast. When they do find me, specifically through Google, the quiz is one of the first things they take.
Check it out - if you search for "personal branding quiz," it's the first result that pops up on Google. Because of this, dozens of people still take my quiz every day.
(So, it really has changed the game!)
How I Promoted My Online Quiz
When I first started promoting my quiz, I encouraged people to take it and share their results on Instagram while tagging me. As a result, I received an outpouring of people sharing their results and tagging me on Instagram. I would then re-share these on my stories, which incentivized others to take the quiz as they saw their peers participating.
As soon as they saw others enjoying their results and the level of detail revealed about themselves on the results page, it motivated them to participate as well.
Since my ideal customers were taking the quiz and re-sharing it, the quiz reached more of my target audience and increased my email list by over 9,000 leads.
I would highly recommend that one of the main actions you take when you first launch a quiz is to incentivize people to participate and share their results. This creates a domino effect. Everyone wants to be a part of something when they see others involved. No one wants to miss out, so they take the quiz, too.
Getting Personal With Your New Leads
I have two quizzes: a personal branding quiz and a "What kind of storyteller are you?" quiz.
Both of my quizzes follow the personality archetype. I chose this approach because it's beneficial to provide people with insightful information about themselves and assist them in applying this knowledge to their online presence.
For instance, if someone takes the personal branding quiz, they could receive one of four potential results:
The Master
The Entrepreneur
The Creative
The Influencer
Each result has a unique set of characteristics. Based on these characteristics, we can decipher the best way for you to present yourself and determine your strategy for building your personal brand.
This is an ideal introduction to building a personal brand because it's all about self-awareness and expressing yourself authentically online.
Often, when people start to build their personal brand, they struggle with where to begin, what type of content to create, and who their content is actually for.
The quiz addresses this issue by providing more insight into who they are and offering a strategy they can use to start creating content immediately.
How to make a quiz?
I wanted to ensure that anyone who took my quiz received thorough and in-depth results, providing them with tangible, useful information about themselves. This required some introspection and research.
It took time.
However, Interact now has a great AI feature that can alleviate some of the burden of writing the results pages, questions, and answers.
InteractAI will literally do this for you, while still offering the customizations necessary to keep your quiz entirely on brand.
Pro tip: Josh Haynam, CEO and co-founder of Interact, mentioned this on my podcast.
Think of that one question people always ask you. What is that question? What is the big question that people want to know the answer to?
Create your quiz around that question. Make that the focus of your quiz. Then, present people with the results on a silver platter.
That's how to win.
Don’t Sleep on Quizzes—They will change the game!
Don't think twice. Interact is an amazing tool. It's worth every penny. Once you've created your quiz, share it with people. Keep reminding them that you have a quiz for them to take and ask them to share their results online.
That is key.
